OpenAI is reportedly working on ChatGPT-powered earbuds, a move that would mark the company’s most direct step yet into consumer hardware, according to people familiar with the matter.

The reported device would allow users to interact with ChatGPT through voice in real time, potentially positioning OpenAI as a competitor to established voice assistant ecosystems. While details remain limited, the project suggests growing interest in embedding generative AI into always-on, wearable formats.

Industry analysts see hardware as a natural extension for AI platforms seeking deeper user engagement. Voice-first devices, in particular, could reduce friction and make AI assistants more seamlessly integrated into daily routines.

OpenAI has not confirmed the development or indicated a launch timeline. However, the reported effort comes amid broader experimentation across the tech sector, as companies explore how AI can move beyond screens and into ambient computing environments.

If realized, ChatGPT-powered earbuds could signal a strategic shift for OpenAI, expanding its role from software provider to platform with direct consumer touchpoints.
